| Item Title | Joshua Lanier Martin and his wife, Sarah Ann Martin. |
| Description | The following is handwritten on the back of both plates: "Taken in Tuscaloosa Ala in the year 1840 by Dr Harrington & Prof Barnard of the University of Alabama" Joshua L. Martin's ends with "and was among the first taken in the city." Sarah Ann Martin's ends with "& the first daguerreotype ever taken in Tuscaloosa." The handwriting is the same on each plate and identifies him as "Gov. Joshua L. Martin", which he did not become until 1845. Though the accession register (July 17, 1953) identifies the handwriting as Governor Martin's, it does not match the writing in a letter to his wife in 1854; the information on the photographs could have been written by Sarah Martin, however. On the mat surrounding his photograph is printed, "Daguerreotype by W. H. Harrington." Daguerreotypes are 2.75 x 3.25 inches each. Case is brown leather with no design. |
