King represented Alabama in the United States Senate from 1819 to 1852. He was elected vice president of the United States in 1852 but died a few weeks after taking the oath of office in 1853.

Gunter served in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1847 to 1850. After the Civil War, he moved to Brazil, bought slaves, and had a plantation. This portrait hangs at the Alabama Department of Archives and History.
