Postwar image has been retouched to show Clayton as a brigadier general. Before his appointment to brigadier general, Clayton had been a colonel of the 1st Alabama Infantry and the 39th Alabama Infantry, C.S.A.
Clayton was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives from 1890 to 1891, and he served in the United States House of Representatives from 1897 to 1914. His father, Henry De Lamar Clayton, Sr., was a brigadier general in the Confederate Army.
