Description
(Uniform indicates rank of major general or higher.) Graduated from West Point , 1859 . Resigned his U.S . Army commission and was commissioned as a first lieutenant in the Confederate Artillery in March 1861 . After promoting through the grades , Wheeler was promoted to brigadier general in October 1862 , major general in January 1863 , and lieutenant general in February 1865 . Major campaigns and battles include Shiloh , Corinth , the Kentucky campaign , Perryville , the Tullahoma campaign , Chickamauga , Chattanooga , the Atlanta campaign , and the Carolinas . By 1870 Wheeler had settled in north Alabama , where he was elected to the U.S . House of Representatives for numerous terms . During the Spanish-American War , he served as major general in the volunteers and saw action in Cuba and in the Philippine-American War . Wheeler retired as a brigadier general in the Regular Army and died in New York in January 1906 ; he is buried in Arlington National Cemetery . Sources : Boatner , Mark M . The Civil War Dictionary .
