Description
(In photograph , buttons on coat indicate rank of major general , although Dibrell was never promoted beyond brigadier.) Although he opposed secession , Dibrell enlisted in the 25th Tennessee Infantry in June 1861 and became a lieutenant colonel in August 1861 . He was not reelected the commander of his regiment in May 1862 , but he received authorization to raise a regiment of partisan rangers , the 8th Tennessee Cavalry , of which he was colonel . Major campaigns and battles include Mill Springs , Corinth , Chickamauga , Knoxville , the Atlanta campaign , and the Carolinas . Promoted to brigadier general in January 1865 . One of Dibrell's last duties was to protect the train carrying the archives of the Confederate War Department . After the war , Dibrell returned to Tennessee , where he became a community and state leader . He died in Sparta , Tennessee , in May 1888 . Sources : Boatner , Mark M . The Civil War Dictionary .
