Description
(Uniform in photograph does not indicate rank ; photo taken on March 31 , 1861 . -- W . Davis) Graduated from West Point , 1838 ; Mexican War veteran . Appointed Superintendent of West Point in January 1861 but held the post for only a few days ; resigned from the U.S . Army in February 1861 . Appointed a brigadier general in the Confederate Army and assigned to command the Confederate forces at Charleston . After Fort Sumter , Beauregard was given command of the Confederate forces near Manassas and promoted to full general after First Manassas . Major campaigns and battles include First Manassas , Shiloh , Drewry's Bluff , Petersburg , and the Carolinas . After the war , Beauregard was a railroad executive , supervisor of the Louisiana Lottery , commissioner of public works in New Orleans , and a writer .
