(Photograph taken in U.S . Army uniform , but like others , Hardee may have worn his old uniform during the early part of his Confederate service . Hardee resigned as a lieutenant colonel from the U.S . Army.) Graduated from West Point , 1838 ; Mexican War veteran . Author of RIFLE AND LIGHT INFANTRY TACTICS , popularly known as HARDEE'S TACTICS , the standard textbook for infantry tactics during the Civil War . Resigned his U.S . Army commission in January 1861 ; appointed to brigadier general in the Confederate Army in June 1861 . Promoted to major general in October 1862 and promoted to lieutenant general in October 1863 . Major campaigns and battles include Shiloh , Perryville , Stones River , Chattanooga , the Atlanta campaign , and the Carolinas . After the war , Hardee moved to Selma , Alabama , as a planter .
