Description	In the letter Murphy argues against the platform recently developed by the Alabama Democratic State Convention. The meeting was held only to choose delegates for the proposed constitutional convention; by adopting this platform and insisting that Democratic delegates adhere to it, the party "attempts to determine the nature of a work which the people of this state had solemnly committed and entrusted to their chosen delegates to the Constitutional Convention": "Those delegates may be elected by the Democratic party; but they will sit, to draft the Constitution of the State, as representatives of the whole people." In particular he examines the platform's stance on suffrage. He argues that the platform cannot limit suffrage according to race while also promising "not to conflict with the Constitution of the United States"; he feels that such a policy is unnecessary because "Negro domination, in this day, is the merest 'bogie" especially since there are no black officeholders in the state. Murphy also disagrees with unrestricted voting rights for all white men: "...I am also in favor of disfranchising, after due notice given, some of the elements of our white population. This could not affect enough of the white voters in the State to disturb what I have defined as 'white supremacy,' in any county of Alabama."
