Item Title
Letter from Marie Owen to her niece , Tallulah Bankhead .
Description
In the letter Owen admonishes her niece for her recent interview with Gladys Hall of Motion Picture magazine , and she comments on the status of Tallulah's career : "Now of course I take it for granted that you were having a lark with the reporter with no thought that she was going to make your words sound like the yapping of a hot canine locked up in the kennel . There should be some restraint put on publications that would publish such damaging stuff about a professional man or woman whose living depends upon their good name . Your following has lost some of its enthusiasm any way on account of the poor stories they have given you to play . This disgusting statement about your private life will lop off a good many more . A heroine must arouse enthusiasm not repulsion . You have been left no more privacy than a crossroads sign board. " Owen advises her niece not to give future interviews unless her producers are able to approve the text before publication , and she also suggests that Tallulah take legal action : "If you got damages from the London paper for reporting that a woman slapped you , your lawyer ought to put the 'Motion Picture ' magazine up against the wall and blast it to pieces with a machine gun. "
