File Name
Q21651 - Q21654
Item Title
Letter from J . Gayle in Tuscaloosa , Alabama , to John Coffee .
Description
In the letter Gayle discusses former Governor Moore's response to Coffee's recent correspondence ; Moore denies Coffee's account of a conversation regarding the conflict between him and Colonel John McKinley . Gayle feels that his "retraction is a most perplexing one " but suspects that Moore is reacting defensively : "...having commenced in error , he thinks he has gone too far to retrace his steps. " He suggests that Moore defeated McKinley in the senatorial election because he promised his support to certain congressmen who were trying to defeat a piece of legislation : "It is entirely obvious that it was understood by the friends of Mr Lewis , of Congress that their vote for his excellency , for the Senate , was given with the expectation of being aided in defeating the Coosa Canal memorial ; and they have not been disappointed , for if you will examine the vote on both questions , you will find...it the same with a few exceptions. " Gayle also mentions that Moore "has marked me out for his next victim , but it gives me not the slightest concern. "
